At Village Farms’ Canadian greenhouses in Delta, British Columbia we are creating clean energy from landfill gas. The gas is a by-product of the decomposing garbage found in landfills. In the city of Vancouver’s main landfill we are using approximately 70% of the landfill gas generated. Village Farms captures it and pipes it across the street to our greenhouses where the VF Clean Energy power station is located.

At VF Clean Energy’s power station powerful engines convert the gas into two energy sources; heat and electricity. The electricity is sent to BC Hydro, the utility company that powers homes and businesses in the Province of British Columbia. The heat is used to keep our water storage tanks warm at the greenhouse. Then, as needed, the warm water is circulated to create radiant heat throughout the greenhouse to keep the plants warm and cozy.

In the daytime the plants use the recycled CO2 in the process of photosynthesis. You remember learning about photosynthesis in your 5th grade science class right? It is the process of plants taking in CO2 and producing oxygen (O). The great thing about CO2 is that it increases plant yields by 30%, this means we get 1/3 more tomatoes! Because the plants use the CO2, we get more tomatoes while also reducing the amount of CO2 going into the atmosphere, making Village Farms carbon neutral. In the summer months the heat is stored to capture the CO2 just for this purpose.

This reduces Vancouver’s greenhouse gas emissions by a whopping 475,000 metric tons of CO2 per year.The carbon emissions reduction is equivalent to taking more than 100,000 vehicles off the road or the energy use equivalent of powering 51,300 homes for one year*. Did you know direct landfill gas released into the atmosphere without burning is 25 times more harmful than CO2 in relation to the warming effect on the atmosphere?
